Some months ago, I was really fond of eating bread. Buttered bread, bread with savories, bread with jam or cheese; these were all comfort foods. I used to eat bread in breakfast, in the middle of the night and any time in between. Bread in the form of sandwiches, rolls etc. was a perfect companion to my emotional turmoil.
In the past few months, I have realised bread has nothing but carbohydrates. The body has a tendency to accumulate these and convert them into fat. Yesterday when I ate a piece of bread with soup, it did not give me the same comfort. I have lost my taste for breads, chapatis, pooris. As far as my fat loss is concerned, this perhaps is the most important achievement.
I have realized that my body does not need a lot of food. It just needs foods that may not be as yummy or tasty but are nutritious.
Bread maybe a good choice for those who do a lot of manual labour, running around or work that involves a lot of physical effort. For people who work on desks or sit down for long periods of time, bread is not a good idea for it will just add to their waistline.
The fact is that our diet inadvertently is stuffed with carbohydrates. Bread, chapattis, pooris and all sorts of products that seem to belong to an era which did not understand the concept of mental and intellectual work. Our foods include very little protein which consumes more calories to digest then carbs.
It is not that we should give up bread entirely. The idea is that bread was designed to be side dish but has become the main dish. Same was the case with chapati or other breads.
Have bread but sparingly. Give more importance to protein, water, vitamins and minerals. Of course, before modifying your diet, please consult your doctor.
